Europe’s energy future and the strategic role of LNG at the heart of the Round Table organized by Adriatic LNG

Milan, September 10th, 2025 – Yesterday afternoon at the Hyatt Centric in Milan, Adriatic LNG — the company which operates the most important LNG regasification terminal in Italy, located in the Northern Adriatic Sea — hosted “Shaping Europe’s energy future: the strategic role of LNG”, an event dedicated to the crucial role of LNG in ensuring the security of the European energy system.
The round table, which gathered around one hundred participants including institutions and industry representatives at national and international level, featured: Guy Moeyens, CEO of VTTI; Massimo Derchi, Chief Operations Officer of Snam; Nicola Monti, CEO of Edison; Pablo Galante Escobar, Executive Board Member of Vitol; Andy Elliott, President of ExxonMobil LNG Asia Pacific; Alessandro Noce, Director General for Energy Markets and Infrastructure at MASE (Ministry of Environment and Energy Security); Francesco Corvaro, Special Envoy for Climate Change of the Italian Government.
Moderated by Michele Cagiano, Deputy Director of Sky TG24, the panel focused on three main themes. The first addressed energy security and industry perspectives in an international context marked by strong geopolitical tensions. The second examined the present and future of the gas market, with particular attention to the strategic role of LNG in ensuring stability and diversification of European energy supplies. Finally, wide space was given to emerging technologies - from hydrogen to CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) - analyzed as additional strategic tools to tackle the challenges of a constantly evolving global energy landscape.
LNG’s increasingly central role in Europe was confirmed by the latest quarterly Gas Market Report of the International Energy Agency (IEA), published just a few weeks ago. The report highlighted that the global growth in LNG imports during the first half of 2025 was concentrated in Europe, recording a 25% increase compared to 2024: a trend linked to several factors, including rising gas demand and reduced pipeline flows from Russia, which is expected to continue throughout 2025.

Never before has the challenge of ensuring secure, sustainable, and clean energy supplies been so central for Italy and Europe" - stated Alexandra Thomas, CEO of Adriatic LNG. "In an increasingly complex global context, characterized by geopolitical tensions, rapid changes in energy transition dynamics, and the growing need to guarantee security and reliability to national systems, regasification terminals confirm their role as a point of reference and LNG as a strategic resource capable of ensuring stability and flexibility. This is clearly demonstrated by the growth in Italian LNG imports, which in the first six months increased by 35% compared to the same period in 2024, 44% of which was supplied by Adriatic LNG, which in 2024 covered around 15% of national gas demand."

"I want to thank all the guests who took part in the event, and particularly the speakers, who shared their vision of the present and future of the sector, offering highly valuable insights. Occasions like this are essential to foster dialogue, exchange of ideas, and collaboration between institutions and operators, with the common goal of building an increasingly secure and sustainable energy future” - concluded Alexandra Thomas.
